The reading passage introduces the Voynich manuscript and lists three theories to guess at its author. However, the lecturer rebuts each of these three theories one by one.
First, the passage assumes that the manuscript was written by Anthony Aschain, who used some sophisticated secret code to convey significant scientific or magical materials. Nevertheless, the speaker believes that Ascham himself was just a common scientist with no special talent. For example, The Little Herbal, the book written by him, only contains some knowledge about common plants taken from other well—known sources. It is unlikely that he was capable of turning out such an elaborately coded, secret document.
Second, the writer suggests that the manuscript might be a fake one containing totally useless contents, written by Edward Kelley, a sixteer.th—century personality who pretended to have magical powers for cheating money out of European nobles. The listening material also admits that Kelley had a bad fame of tricking people, but it immediately states that citizens living in Kelley’ s century were too easy to deceive so there was no need to make up such a complicated manuscript in order to fool them.
According to the lecture, if Kelley intended to cheat citizens then, he just had to create a much simpler book.
The last theory proposed by the author is that the manuscript is a modern fake produced by Voynich himself. The speaker opposes this idea because the pages and inks used to make this script can date back to at least four hundred years. Even though voynich could get ancient pages from old books to make this fake one, it is still impossible for him to find 400—year—old ink.
