According to the reading material, the author points out that there are there hypothesis to explain the decline of yellow cedar; however, in the listening material, the lecturer doubts what reading says.
Firstly, the author of the reading material believes that insect parasites is an important factor towards the decline of the yellow cedar because of their attack. However, the listening part points out that yellow cedar trees that are healthy contain poisonous chemicals in barks and leaves, which prevents the trees from getting attacked by the beetles. The trees that beetles attack are the ones that are already sick and are close to death anyways, therefore beetle parasites are not responsible for the decrease of the yellow cedar trees.
Secondly, the reading passage suggests that brown bears cause the decline of trees due to bears’ aggressive feeding habits. But the woman in the listening part insists that the brown bears may damage some trees, but they cannot be the cause of the wide-ranged decline of cedar trees. Cedar trees declined all over North America, both on mainland and islands. Whereas bears doesn’t live on islands, but the cedar trees on islands are also declining, therefore bears are not the main cause towards this problem.
Finally, the article holds that freezing climate is responsible for the general decline of the species because climate changes affect trees growth time and make their roots suffer from cold weather. However, the woman in the listening points out that freezing climate is not to blame, for It is proven by the fact that many more trees die at lower elevations, where it’s warmer than that at higher elevations. The cold weather may only have made the tree roots more sensitive rather than cause their decline.
