Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
Experts suggest parents should limit the time children under 13 spend on electronic devices, such as smart phone, laptop (portable), tablets for less than one hour everyday other than schoolwork.
Young children are exposed to substantial amounts of screen media nowadays. Even though spending moderate amounts of time on high-quality children’s media has had a positive effect on their development, too much screen time may have tremendous consequence for them. From my perspective, parents should drastically cut the time their children are allowed to use electronic gadget in one hour.
To begin with, parents limit screen time to no more than one hour a day can effectively prevent children from indulging in easy-to-get entertainment, such as online games and short videos, which may have a damaging influence on their self-development. The primary reason is that with parents’ supervision, children have to devote their time to something meaningful and beneficial to the self-improvement, such as reading more books, communicating with friends face-to-face, and mastering some useful skills. They are therefore enabled to develop as mature, well-rounded individuals. However, if children are allowed to use electronic devices without intervention, they are apt to spend more time using these devices than they do on any other activity, and some children even log up to nine hours a day on phones and tablets on the weekends, which will undoubtedly lead to poor performance at school. The story happening to Zoe could perfectly prove the statement. After her mother limited screen time for recreation to no more than one hour during the last term, Zoe concentrated on study and obtained excellent grades on her final exams. Meanwhile, she had more time to participate in activities organized by the fine art club. As a result, she became skilled in painting and also improved the communication ability by exchanging ideas with other club members. However, just two years ago, she wasted plenty of precious time on smart phone, tabletsand other electronic devices every day and lost valuable opportunities to enhance her ability. Therefore, setting limits on screen time can have a positive effect on children’s all-round development.
Besides that, reducing children’s time on electronic devices makes contribution to their physical health. The primary reason why these devices have a negative impact on children’s health is that since children under 13 are going through a crucial phase of growth, spending too much time on screens are easier to be linked to a range of health problems, especially near-sightedness. To be more specific, Children whose screen time is not limited always stare at the screen for a long time, which strains their eyes, and then these kids fall victim to short sight. By contrast, if children are required to use electronic devices for less than one hour a day, they can spend more time going outside and being surrounded by an abundance of green vegetation, which is beneficial to preventing children from being near-sighted. Taking Jessica as an example, she persisted in spending two hours doing outdoor sports after school instead of using tablet to browse websites at home. As a result, she was never bothered by ailments such as near-sightedness or headache. On the other hand, Joe spent almost 4 hours on the computer every day, and the excessive screen time not only contributed to poor eyesight but also increased the risk of developing obesity. Thus, to avoid these health problems which are often associated with young children, kids should be required to use electronic devices for an hour or less and spend more time engaging in activities which are good for their physical health.
To put everything in a nutshell, parents should take responsibility for setting limits on children’s time spent on electronic devices, for the limitation can positively affect children’s self-enhancement and physical health.
