There is a wide variety of movies and television programs available for us to watch in our spare time. Some people claim that these movies and programs have a responsibility to show the viewers that good people are rewarded, and bad people are punished. I hold the opposing view, however, and will explain why in the paragraphs below.
My first point focuses on our experiences in the real world. It is possible to hear stories about bad people getting rewarded and good people being punished, so this should be reflected in some of the movies and programs we watch. It can be seen as patronizing to the viewer to pretend that good guys always win. I can think of several real-life examples to illustrate what I mean. There was a big news story last year about the son of a famous businessman in my country, who took drugs and got drunk before driving his car. He hit and killed a man on a motorbike but, rather than get arrested and put in prison, the police let him go and he went abroad. In another story, it was found that a man who had been given the death penalty for a double murder was actually innocent of the crime. This was only established after he was put to death. These are clear cases of real-life events where the good suffer and the bad escape without punishment and I think that movies and programs should show this, too.
Secondly, if we are constantly told that good guys win and bad guys lose, it can become predictable and boring, and the programs and movies can lose their edge. It can also, in a way, insult the viewer's judgment of what is right and wrong. We are told that reinforcing this message helps to guide people in their behavior, though I strongly disagree. A prime example of this is one of my favorite movies, Seven. It is a thriller and involves a serial killer who plans for seven murders based on the seven deadly sins. Although he ends up getting caught, he manages to win, in a way, by successfully carrying out his plan. It is a hugely provocative film, and it left a lasting impression on me, as the good guy lost, and the bad guy won. However, it has in no way affected my judgment that it is very wrong to kill people. This nicely illustrates my point.
To recap, I disagree with those who say that on-screen depictions should always show good people winning and bad people losing. For one thing, this does not reflect real-life. For another, it can make programs become predictable and unchallenging, while also not respecting the viewer's intelligence and judgement.
