Nowadays, the world seems to be changing quickly compared with the past, when things were more predictable. I think it was certainly easier in the past to select an occupation that would lead to a stable and successful career. There are two main factors to support this view.
The seemingly relentless rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world around us and, in particular, the jobs market place. What were traditionally secure professions have quickly been, or at least will be replaced soon by robots. A robot workforce does not require breaks, holidays, or pension plans and can work twenty-four hours a day, if needed. In this environment, I strongly feel that it is more challenging to choose a job that will lead to a stable profession than in the past. A personal example illustrates this well. My friend's father worked as a long-distance truck driver for a freight company for about twenty-five years and earned good money. His eldest son followed in his father's footsteps, assuming he would also have a safe career in front of him. On the contrary, AI has been used to produce driverless trucks, and now my friend's elder brother is finding his job and his livelihood threatened. This has all happened in the last few years and could not have been realistically predicted even ten years ago.
In recent decades there has been a significant increase in the number of young people taking degrees at colleges and universities. The effect of this has been to produce far more graduates than in the past. However, there has not been a corresponding increase in the number of jobs available. This has led to far less certainty in job areas that were previously considered safe and secure due to there being distinctly more competition for fewer jobs. My sister serves as a good example of this. She studied accounting at university and was expecting to walk into a stable career as an accountant. In spite of her expectations, she found that there were far fewer jobs available when she graduated. Since leaving university, she has had a series of part-time, low-paid jobs at restaurants and is still looking for work in her specialist area. This serves as a timely reminder of how things have changed.
In brief, I am firmly of the opinion that the jobs market was more predictable in the past, meaning that choosing a stable and rewarding profession to follow was easier. AI has affected many previously stable careers, and a glut of university graduates has meant that there are not enough jobs available to supply a saturated market.
