高分范文
It is of extreme importance that teachers are accurately evaluated in terms of their teaching abilities in order to maintain high standards in the classroom. Some schools choose to do this by consulting the students, whereas others prefer to have other teachers perform this task. I am of the opinion that students are the best judges of teachers' abilities. I can support this argument in two main ways.
To start with, students spend far more time with their teachers than other teachers do, and, consequently, are better able to judge if and what they are learning. Whereas an observation by another teacher merely provides a snapshot of one class, the students are with their teacher every day. Students know, regardless of whether they like the teacher or not, how effectively they learn. A clear illustration of this relates to an English teacher we had at school. She was very strict, and the students were quite scared of her, but we all knew that we learned a lot with her. There was another teacher, however, who was popular with a lot of students. He made lots of jokes and would not mind if we played about in class. We all knew, though, that we did not learn much with him. This shows that ultimately, students are the best judges of a teacher's abilities.
A further point relates to the fairness of the two approaches. A group of students can anonymously give their opinions and know that the teacher will not find out exactly who said what. In contrast, another teacher evaluating their colleague may have reasons for not wanting to offend them. There was a case of this at my high school, which highlights this point. One of our teachers was always observed and evaluated by his colleague. The problem was that we knew they were friends as we had seen them out socializing together. This risked compromising the process of objective evaluation. Our teacher was not particularly good, and often his lessons were boring. Despite this fact, he never changed, even after his colleague's evaluations, and I feel that his friend was not being as honest as the students would have been, if they had been consulted.
To sum up, of the two approaches, I strongly believe that students hold the key to more effective assessments of a teacher's performance. The students are very aware of whether they are learning or not. Additionally, they are not open to compromise in the way a colleague can be when tasked with evaluating another teacher.
