In the lecture, the professor talks about 2 ways that producing electricity can benefit fish. So, the first benefit is that it can help some fish to capture prey. For example, an electric eel can produce a strong current in its body. So, when an eel come into contact with a smaller fish, it’ll send out the electric current, shock and paralyze the small fish so it can capture and eat the fish easily. The other benefit is that it can help to navigate the environment by detecting nearby objects. For example, there’s a fish called knife fish, and it can produce an electric field around its body. So, when there’s a rock nearby, it’ll sense an interference in this electric field, so it can swim away from the rock and avoid harming itself.
