In the lecture, the professor talks about 2 different factors that can cause population changes. The first factor is called biotic factor, like the predator prey cycle. For example, the population of mice varies with the owls’ population, since owls treat mice as their prey. If one year, there’ re more owls than usual, then the number of mice will drop, because there’re more owls to eat the mice. The second one is called abiotic factor, like the weather. For example, the rabbits start having their young at the end of the winter, and they keep reproducing until the following winter. But, if this year has a short winter season, then the rabbit can start reproducing much earlier than longer winter seasons. This means that rabbits will experience at least one extra reproductive cycle. So, the rabbits’ population will increase.
