In the lecture, the professor talks about that when a major climate change occurs, it may lead to the extinction of various plant and animal species. He gives an example of a giant Australian bird called thunderbird as an example. The researchers have found many thunder birds’ bones all together in one spot, which is really rare. So, they believe that there’s a climate change behind. The hypothesis is that during a long and dry period, the birds may have flocked together at a lake. And if it lasted too long without raining, the birds had to gather there and finally died because of the drought. The scientists think that the lake where they find the bones was one of the last sources of fresh water during the drought. So, the birds gathered there together, struggled for a while and eventually the lake dried up, the species was extinct.
