In the lecture the professor talks about habituation, and gives an example to illustrate this. Assume prairie dogs live in an area with human beings frequently come and go. The first time the animals see a person, they may act, like barking like a dog, jump up and down instinctively to warn other prairie dogs nearby. This is similar to what they do to the animals that prey on them, such as a snake or a hawk. They will keep repeating this kind of behavior, day after day. However, if people pass through the area without hurting them for a longer time, the prairie dogs will gradually stop barking and jumping up and down when they see a human being passing through the area. This means that they stop reacting to human as a threat, and this is an example of habituation.
