参考范文:
Formal education plays a big part in most people's lives. Teachers, therefore, have a great responsibility in helping their students as best as they can. I believe that high school teachers lecturing while the students taking notes is more effective than discussions and projects. There are two main strands to my argument.
Firstly, a lecturing style is direct and time-efficient compared with having discussions and doing projects. It is important to use the limited classroom time wisely. Having discussions and doing projects can sometimes go off-topic. When there are lots of facts and figures to remember, this can present problems. A prime example of this was learning history at school. We would have lots of conversations and group work about the time in history we were studying, but when it came to the exam, we were required to know specific dates and names of people and places. The teacher realized in the second semester that we were behind on the content he needed to cover. To make up for this, the last few weeks were very rushed, as he tried to give us all the important information for the exam. A lecturing style would have allowed him to have better managed the time and, consequently, the course content.
A second point relates to fairness. When the teacher lectures and the students take notes, it is easy to establish that everyone has exactly the same information. With discussions, sometimes there may be differences in what different students take away from each lesson. A lecturing approach means this problem should not arise. I recall a math teacher we had at high school who was very clear each lesson on exactly what we needed to learn for the exam. I remember he would check this carefully at the end of each lesson. This meant that when it came to exam time, it was very straightforward to prepare. We all knew exactly what we needed to learn, and there was no variation in the information we all had. Had the teacher used discussions and projects instead, there could have easily been some confusion and variation between us regarding the required course content for the exam.
To conclude, I strongly feel that high school teachers should employ a lecturing approach for their students' benefit. It results in better time management in relation to the course content for the teacher. In addition, it provides a level playing field for the students in that everyone has exactly the same information from the classes.
