高分范文
More students are going to university than ever before, and the range of courses available is broader than in the past. My feeling is that history is a very important subject that every university student should study, even if it is not their main academic field. There are two key reasons to support this view, and I will detail these below.
In the first place, I believe history is our greatest teacher. By studying history, we can find many lessons to help us today and in the future. Many mistakes were made in the past, and by identifying these, we may be able to solve problems or at least avoid making the same mistakes today. One clear example of this is how societies and communities solve conflicts. From the past, we can see that violence was one of the main ways to solve problems both between different groups and within communities or tribes. Whether it was English gentlemen having duels to settle disputes, or one community invading and conquering another over land ownership, violence was the accepted way to address these issues. In contrast, in many parts of the world today, we have learned that violence is not the best way for societies to solve conflicts. We have developed legal systems and frameworks, for example, to help resolve disagreements and to reduce the need for violence. This has made societies more peaceful, in general.
Secondly, I think it is very important to have an understanding of where we come from to gain an appreciation of what we have nowadays, regardless of what subject we choose to study. It is easy to forget in today's fast-paced, information-filled world how lucky we are compared to the past. We are often surrounded by bad news, which gives us a negative view of the world and makes us feel that we are living in difficult times. However, when we study the past, we can see that, quality of life has improved significantly for many people. Life expectancy has risen in most parts of the world, for example. In addition, fewer mothers and babies die in childbirth. More people have access to clean water, many major diseases from the past have been beaten by modern medicine, and living
conditions have improved dramatically for many people around the world. By learning about these great improvements, we can more fully appreciate what we have today, and we can maintain a more balanced perspective on our lives in the modern world.
To summarize, I agree that taking history should be compulsory for all university students, regardless of their study area. Important lessons can be learned to help improve modern societies, and we can keep a more level outlook on the world we live in. We can understand how much more fortunate we are to live today than in years gone by.
