TASK 4
Explain how the example of the mite and the hummingbird in the lecture illustrates the concept of phoresy.
· Reading:
Term: phoresy
Definition: use another animal species to transport them without causing injury to other species
Usage: benefits the passenger causes little or no harm to the species doing the transporting
· Listening:
mites, feed on nectar, can’t fly, hummingbirds
no harm to hummingbird, without bird, mites would find it much more difficult to get food
sample answer:
The concept of phoresy is when animals want to transport themselves from one place to another, they might use another species to do so without causing injury to the other species. The professor used the mites and the hummingbirds as an example to illustrate this.
The mites are tiny and they feed on nectar, they want to transport from one flower to the other but they cannot fly, so they get on the hummingbirds to do so. The phoresy would benefit the passenger but cause little or no harm to the species doing the transporting because mites can find food, with the hummingbirds, but the mites are really small so they wouldn’t give extra burden to the birds. However, without hummingbirds, mites would find it much more difficult to get food.
