The passage claims that Brendan voyaged from Ireland to North America in the 6th century, while the lecture argues that none of the evidence presented in the reading is strong.
In the first place, the author asserts that places described in the stories of Brendan's voyage resemble the island locations along the way to North America. In contrast, the speaker believes that it is not sure that those descriptions in the stories really refer to those islands. For example, the island of sheep might not be Faroe Islands where sheep were raised because sheep were also raised in other places. The burning hill might not refer to lceland because it might not mean the active volcano on lceland but people setting many fires.
Besides, the reading passage states that the recent Curragh copy proves that boats in Brendan's time were technologically sufficient to cross the ocean, which is contradicted by the listening that this copy was not the exact Curragh in Brendan's time. The researchers' ship is longer, 12 meters long, and has more sails. So, although this larger and more powerful ship can make an 8,000 kilometers voyage, Brendan's Curraghs might not.
Finally, the writer points out that old markings discovered in North America are Irish letters of ogham made by Brendan's crew, while the professor claims that although some markings resemble the old Irish alphabet, many others do not. Some look like pictures, images of a sun, a hand, and a tree. But the real ogham had only letters without pictures. The markings might be made by native Americans.
