In a modern world as complex and intricate as ours, everyone is sparing no effort to dig his potential in order to gain a foothold. The hustle and bustle of life has driven some people to set foot in a new area to stand out in the fierce competition. It is proposed that developing many different skills is an indicator of one’s success since it shows his flexibility in front of the public. From my point of view, however, people focusing on one skill only are virtually more successful compared with their versatile counterparts.
First and foremost, by focusing on one skill, an ordinary person becomes an expert in his field, which is a public display of success. In most cases, once people begin to try different skills, they are usually faced with the dilemma of dividing limited time and effort among many skills. It is highly possible that they will end up with doing nothing right. Fortunately, as for those focusing on one skill, by making the best use of time, they can dig deeper into the core of their field and find the secret of sharpening their skills, starting from laymen, senior professionals, and finally to masters. Doctors are a good case in point. Fundamental theories in different subjects show medical students a basic picture of physiology and pathology. As their learning and practicing continue, they will narrow down their study to one discipline, such as pediatrics, endocrinology, gynaecology, or even to one disease, diabetes. No one can deny the fact that an authoritative diabetes doctor Is more successful than a general practitioner.
Second, enjoying a simpler lifestyle with only one skill is a clear signal of successful being. To be more specific, aside from their own responsibilities, people with one skill do not need to get involved in other matters which have no bearing on their domain. After fulfilling their own duty, they can completely relax and enjoy a care-free lifetime, such as reading books, watching movies, or spending time with family and friends. However, those versatile people are not so fortunate to have a moment of peace even after work. Due to their various skills, they are the first aid whenever people around them cannot handle things in hand. For instance, as long as an accountant in an advertising agency can do his job well in financial affairs, he can freely make personal plans for life after work because other matters are not his speciality or concern.
Admittedly, developing different skills shows a person’s great power and ability. When a resourceful individual knows something in almost everything, he can win others’ applause and respect owing to his understanding in many subjects. Possibly, he has more opportunities than others in terms of career development. On the other hand, such Mr. Know-It-All will only be given petty jobs because he cannot be an expert in any field, let alone achieving success in performing his duties.
In conclusion, while we may have chances to study in many disciplines, people focusing on only one skill are truly more successful than those who try many different skills.
