In the modern age, getting information is no longer a privilege to an ordinary person with the help of high technology. Almost everyone keeps an eye on the current events from news reports from a myriad of information sources to be a well-informed citizen. It is proposed that reading news presented by journalists with similar views as one’s own is conducive to his mental health since he does not have to suffer too much pressure. From my perspective, however, it is a more sensible choice to focus on news presented by those whose views are different from the readers own thoughts.
First and foremost, it provides an opportunity for us to add to wisdom if we catch news reported by people with different views from our own. In most cases, when a person is always immersed in the news whose ideas are similar to his own, he can never outcompete himself because such news is in essence repetitive to him. However, if he is disposed to take a look at news from a different angle, he is virtually expanding his horizon after finding his own blind spot in his knowledge base. For example, according to conventional wisdom, most citizens would strongly recommend plain porridge for those newly cured patients, whereas they may be surprised to know from a news article about an interview 'of a nutritionist that plain porridge is not an optimal option because it contains too few nutrients to help patients recover. This report from a journalist in a different standpoint shows these citizens what they never know before. It is clear that reading news from different angles augments one's knowledge.
Second, by reading news from a different perspective, we gradually cultivate critical thinking. In general, most people are reluctant to see things differently because it is unpleasant to step out of their comfort zone. Little by little, they become narrow-minded and self-centered in many respects. Ironically, if they are patient enough to read through news of a different viewpoint, they will see that their opponents also have a strong point to make anyway. Bearing this in mind, they may learn to think critically about everything in their life afterwards. Take food stands in street market for instance. When we applaud the proposal in the newspaper of cancelling any food stand to build a garden city, we are reminded by other reports of how these little food stands support low-income families. Then, we will think twice about our position and be careful what we wish for.
Admittedly, it is enjoyable to read news from journalists who share similar views as we do. Since we are familiar with the basic logic and reasoning behind such news, it takes very little effort to understand it. Thus, it gives us pleasure instead of pressure in reading, On the other hand, news, a form of public knowledge, is generally considered to increase value as it circulates among the public. If we always accept the easy half, we will miss the value of the other half. After all, it is more desirable to look at the whole picture of a story.
In conclusion, while we can have access to various kinds of news as we like, it is advisable to read news from journalists holding a different view from our own.
