The reading passage states that a new project of cultivating broccoli on the East Coast in America where it is popular will bring potential benefits if scientist can successfully create this new type of broccoli, differing from the traditional one growing on the West Coast. However, the professor in the lecture refutes the idea by saying that growing broccoli on East Coast might not be as successful or beneficial as its creators claim.
First, the author states that consumers will buy broccoli at a lower price if it is possible to grow broccoli on the East Coast due to the lower transportation cost. Nevertheless the speaker disagrees with the idea by saying that it does not necessarily make the new broccoli cheaper for consumers. Growing new broccoli on the East Coast will lead to lower yields than broccoli on the West Coast. Therefore, considering their less harvest per hectare, farmers will sell their produce at an even higher price, which in turn cancels out the savings on transportation. Consequently, consumers on the East Coast will probably not save any money buying the locally grown broccoli.
Second, the writer claims that the new type of broccoli, with traditional breeding techniques, will probably be more desirable to consumers than some other new genetically modified crops. On the contrary, the professor challenges the belief by pointing out that the public might still be suspicious about the new broccoli. Because financial support for this research comes from the same companies that created genetically modified crops in the past. Considering those companies’ history of using genetic modification techniques to develop other crops, some consumers distrust those companies, thus distrusting any project those companies are involved in. Finally, consumers may reject the new broccoli as well.
Last, the author asserts that such locally grown broccoli, which can retain most of its beneficial nutrients and vitamins after it is harvested, is healthier for East Coast residents because it can be eaten much sooner after it is cut. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes the idea by saying that it is not necessarily a good argument for creating a new breed of broccoli growing on the East Coast. Other vegetables that are already grown on the East Coast contain similar nutrients as broccoli does. For example, provides comparable health benefits and is better in some respects. It is grown not only during the summer, but also during the fall and winter. Therefore, we should educate people about eating fresh healthy vegetables that are already available locally instead of wasting money and resources on creating new vegetables.
