For many, the frequency to visit a charity website and click on the “donate” button has reduced substantially in our society today. This phenomenon leads some to believe that willing helpers in
Philanthropic work are rather rare these days. Contrary to their view, my position is that more and more members of the public in fact devote their time and attention to offering assistance at the present time.
Initially, it is people’s awareness of the happiness acquired from the charitable work experience that drives them to display this behavior. In this day and age, with the availability of a multitude of charitable organizations, people have more opportunities to perform good ends, such as donating dozens or hundreds of dollars or second-hand clothes and applying for a membership in a local voluntary group. The result of this is that people tend to go through a state of mind of being delighted. Once this feeling has been aroused, it can be the motive for the continuation of other similar altruistic actions in the future. In the past, however, most of the citizens were not informed of the available channels and resources, such as certified charitable organizations and relevant campaigns, to offer contribution to those in need. Therefore, it is less likely for them to have a taste of this sense of mental and psychological well-being and express their willingness to give a helping hand.
Additionally, the frequent occurrence of people’s altruism nowadays could possibly be connected to their continuous exposure to similar charitable deeds. That is to say, if some individuals happen to realize that their family members and friends are registered volunteers in local charitable institutions and have been devoted themselves to a specific initiative aimed at assisting those who live in distress, they tend to imitate such exemplary behavior and take a step forward to commence doing relevant philanthropic work. My aunt Amanda’s experience can illustrate this point. She used to avoid eye contact with and walk away from a homeless person. When receiving an email requesting financial contributions to charities, she would directly toss it in the trash box without a second thought. Volunteering at a local church, school, or soup kitchen would never be on her list of priorities. It has been a different story now as in the last couple of years she was able to witness the good conducts of her neighbors and colleagues who were very generous with time and money and actively engaged in helping the minorities, the jobless and the like. She has been in the role as a dedicated volunteer in the local food bank and church for more than one year and a half!
To conclude, people at present show stronger inclination to offer generous support to others. This is because they are more exposed to the charitable acts.
