The reading passage talks about three methods that try to reverse the increasing salinity of the Salton Sea in California, but the lecturer holds the opinion that none of these methods provides a satisfactory solution.
The first point in the reading states that special desalination facilities could be established to remove salt from the lake. However, the lecturer argues that although it would reduce the lake’s salinity, this method would pose health risks to humans. In addition to salt, the desalination process would leave behind other chemicals, some of which are toxic, like selenium. If there was strong wind, people might breathe in these harmful substances and develop health problems.
The second point in the reading suggests that sea water could be introduced to dilute the lake water. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that this measure is difficult to implement because the government does not have enough resources to support the construction of pipelines or canals needed to introduce sea water. In fact, the shortest route linking the lake and the coast of Pacific Ocean is 100 km.
The third point in the reading proposes that the government can solve the problem by building walls to separate the lake into several sections. In contrast, the lecturer contends that this measure is not likely to work in the long run. The Salton Sea is located in an area with frequent, and sometimes intense, geological activities like earthquakes. The walls might be effective for a short term, but in case of a major earthquake, they would be destroyed, allowing water with different salinities to mix back together.
