Recently, I read an article about comparing young people today with those twenty years ago. From many perspectives, it made a conclusion that youth today are not well-behaved as their parents in the young age. Since more and more voice of criticism, such as this article, about young people in the twenty-first century occurs, many people consider that our society have made too many rules on the youth. However, I disagree with this point of view. In fact, the youngsters today enjoy and embrace more freedom in their choice of study and work.
First, the parents of those young people today have given their children more freedom than in the past. There is a common sense that the pressure on a young man or woman considerably comes from their families. This kind of pressure was ordinary two decades ago. My mother sometimes complains to me that my grandfather always restricted her to do anything which she disliked and interfered with her own decisions when she was a young girl. However, things have changed a lot. Comparing her experience, I strongly have felt that we are not under that control of varied strict rules. Since our parents do not put extremely strict rules on us like our grandparents, do not interfere in our life planning and give enough respects to our privacy, we can do many more things than before with less limitation. For example, we can go aboard for study or traveling alone or get married with our true love who may not get well along with our parents. It is obvious that those things can hardly be permitted by parents in the last century. So the rules from the family become less strict than in the past.
Second, now many companies in the world do not set up rigid rules to confine their young employees to normal working responsibilities. Because the success of a company today has become more closely linked to the creative spark of its employees, more and more companies stimulate those young people to create whatever they want by canceling unnecessary rules. There is one of the best instances, Google’s 20% Time Initiative, which encourages those young Google's employees to spend twenty percent of their whole work time on some projects which are not related to their job description. This policy benefits Google in many aspects and numerous innovative ideas or well-known products, such as Gmail, Google Map and News, come from this practice. As a result, those troublesome rules, which prevent the youth from creating, disappeared naturally.
Admittedly, those voices of criticism like that article mentioned before seem to reveal the fact that our society are too strict to our youngsters. However, they are defined less as the strictness than as the expectation. Considering some stupid behaviors among youth today like being addicted in drug or gambling, which are caused by the excessive freedom, our whole society strongly hopes our young people can become strong enough to take the burden of the responsibility for their families, work and even their mother countries.
In conclusion, I believe that our youth today are beneath a circumstance where freedom of choice is granted.
