As modern life becomes complex, people nowadays are increasingly overwhelmed with a number of tasks. Some people argue that those who do a lot things cannot really do them well. I believe there is some truth to this statement.
As the proverb goes “Jack of all trades, master of none.”, people who perform several tasks at the same time have to channel their attention into different things. As a result, they might be spared too thin to finish each one of them well. A case in this point is my friend Lucy whose parents signed her up for several classes after school including piano, painting, and computer as her parents believed these extracurricular activities could give their daughter a fulfilling life. However, things did not turn out the way they had originally wanted. Lucy had to squeeze some time to attend these extra classes after finishing the homework left by her school teachers , which really stressed her out. Both her piano and computer teachers had complained to her parents that Lucy could neither finish the required practices nor stay focused on the class. Worse still, she soon found herself fall behind her studies at school, which left her no choice but to drop all the classes and focus solely on her schoolwork. It seems clear that people could never expect to be master of many different things at the same time.
A certain amount of time is needed in order to successfully complete a new task . Only in this way can people not only finish their work with great caution but also review it over and over again in case of unnecessary mistakes. This can be easily achieved when they are doing one thing at a time since there are no other distractions bothering them. However, once they are required to finish more than one task at the same time, little time is left for them to take each one of them seriously and they might eventually fail in doing everything well. I have heard a story about sir Christopher Nolan that can prove this point. Seven years ago, he started to make a science fiction film, which was not easy for him since as a director he knew little about science theories and sci-fi fans always had high expectations in terms of the visual effects and story plot. Obviously, there were a lot of things for Nolan to take into account and he decided to first and foremost make sure the physics involved were correctly presented by studying as a full-time student in MIT. This decision came as a surprise to everyone but Nolan believed that studying physics called for consistent hard work and he might end up achieving nothing if there were distractions from elsewhere. Therefore, in the next two years, he had done nothing but learn physics from scratch and most of what he had learnt was later applied into the movie. His efforts paid off as the way the movie Interstellar related the theory to real life attracted millions of audience. It is safe to say that success comes from continuous efforts that can only be guaranteed when people are only concentrating on one thing.
To conclude, being busy with many different things would bring distractions. Consequently, they might fail to do everything well.
