Gossip news about entertainers and athletes’ private life flood the media, prir.t or online, every day. These people’ s family, children, friends and even pets have hit the headlines so often that some would wonder whether they deserve to have more privacy than they have now. From my perspective, an affirmative answer to this question would benefit both society, these famous people and their fans.
Less media exposure for the celebrities’ private life would make a conducive impact on the whole society, especially young people. Most of the gossip news is about the stars’ scandals, rather than their positive behaviors. In the media coverage, a famous singer could meanwhile be a drug abuser and a glorious athlete might also commit domestic violence. The terrible thing is their fans are often young kids who have not established their own moral values yet to distinguish right and wrong, so they are unable to tell which of their idol’ s behavior is worth imitating. All those conducts of their idols will be admired and imitated indiscriminately. They may take drugs or abuse their family members physically, thinking, “‘why can’ t I do as my idol did?” In this case, less reports on the so—called private life can eliminate those negative effects.
Decreasing these public figures’ exposure would also help protect them as well as their fans. When a personality is followed by the endless stream of tabloid photographers, his or her personal safety could be seriously threatened. For example, British‘s Princess Diana died in a car accident when her driver drove through a tunnel at a high speed in order to avoid the paparazzi.
Before this tragedy, she had pleaded with the media for many times to leave her some private space, but the media just ignored her request for attracting more audience or clicks. Although she was not an actress or athlete, who can tell for sure that no entertainer would end up like her? Fans would suffer as well. Once the media leak a top singer’ s whereabouts, crazy fans rush into the airport or railway station in the name of picking up their idol. This is how many stampedes have taken place. Only when such private information does not go public may the safety of both the stars and their fans be guaranteed.
Privacy is a common right of citizens and celebrities and people around them shall enjoy it as well. Although famous entertainers and athletes appear in IV shows and front pages, they also deserve their own time after work. When the phone number, family address and even children’s school are exposed, they and their family, children in particular, would receive undue disturbances. Sun Cruise, the daughter of the best—known American actor Tom Cruise, used to be one of the most photographed children in the world. She could not enjoy her right to grow up like a normal kid until her parents’ divorce, which kept her away from the media spotlight. There are still many pictures she and her mother do not want to be posted on websites. This unwanted attention is unfair for her since she is not a public figure.
Entertainers and athlete deserve more privacy than now. Not only does society benefit from a conducive social environment resulting from less media reports, but also the celebrities and people around them meet their need for personal safety and a private life.
