Educating children has always been a big concern for parents since ancent trmes. When the unprecedented development of technology brings children cell phones, online games, and social networking websites, a majority of parents start worrying about their side effects. Personally, I do agree that educating children is a more difficult task today than it was in the past, as they spend so much time on cell phone, online games, and social networking websites.
To begin with, parents may be concerned that spending too much time on cell phone; online games, and social networking websites may have adverse effects on their academic performance. When children spend so much time on such entertainment, they will definitely have limited time for their after-school assignments. In other words, they may fail to finish their homework. Nor will they have chance to review their notes and prepare for their quizzes or finals. In the meantime, when children are crazy about some online games or social networking websites, they just could not help thinking about them in classes. Such distractions may prevent them from taking in new knowledge. Under both circumstances, children’ s academic performance may be affected negatively. Aware of such potential effects, parents often have to guide their children as to how to use cell phones and social networking websites and play online games properly. Moreover, they often need to work out a plan as for how long and when children are allowed to use cell phones, play online games, or surf the social networking websites. By contrast, in the era without such electronic devices, parents were generally free from the anxiety that their children may overuse these means of entertainment.
Apart from the concern about their children' s study, parents may also worry that the children may be misled by information on cell phones, online games, and social networkingwebsites. When children watch movies on cell phones or play some online games, they are likely to be exposed to some improper information such as violence. Since children are generally too young to tell right from wrong, chances are that they may try to imitate those violent actions and use them in daily life. Take my neighbour Oliver as an instance. Oliver is ten years old and he was fascinated by some Hong Kong Gangster movies. Last week his parents were required to have a meeting with his headmaster, because other kids reported that Oliver always tried to solve problems by violence when he had some arguments with his classmates. It is not until then did Oliver parents realize the terrible influence that those gangster movies have on him. This clearly shows that parents nowadays are supposed to know clearly the possible bad consequences cell phones, online games and social networking websites could bring and how to guide their children to use them properly.
To sum up, it is definitely much harder for parents nowadays to educate their children since they have to put in much more effort to teach their children very carefully about how to use electronic devices and social networking website in a rational way.
