The passage claims that the Greeks never really built the burning mirror, while the lecture argues that claims in the reading are unconvincing.
In the first place, the author asserts that the ancient Greeks did not have enough technology to build a large sheet of cooper mirror with parabolic shape. In contrast, the speaker believes that the Greeks did not need to build a single sheet of cooper mirror. Instead, they can use dozens of small pieces of cooper and arrange them into a parabolic shape to make a mirror. The Greek mathematicians know the properties of parabola and can thus direct the building.
Besides, the reading passage states that the burning mirror which might take a long time to set a ship on fire is impractical. However, this is contradicted by the listening that it would take ten minutes for burning mirror to set the wood on fire but the Roman boats were not just made of wood. A sticky material called pitch which was used to seal wood space and make the boat waterproof would catch fire within seconds and the fire would spread to the wood even if the boat was moving.
Finally, the writer points out that there is no reason for the Greek to build burning mirror which is not more effective than flaming arrow, while the professor claims that Roman soldiers were familiar with flaming arrows and were ready to watch for them but they could not see the burning rays of a mirror. Thus the fire would start more surprisingly at some unobserved places.
