The reading passage talks about three reasons why the Edmontosaur—one of the most common North Slope dinosaurs—could have survived the winter through migration, but the lecturer holds the opinion that none of the reasons presented by the reading is convincing.
The first point in the reading states that the Edmontosaur, which fed on plants only, had to migrate to the south for food during winter. However, the lecturer argues that Edmontosaurs did not have to mirgrate south for food. Instead, they could have survived the winter in the north by eating nutritious dead plants left from summer because the summer temperatures in the North Slope area 100 million years ago were warmer than they are today. Also, a large amount of sunshine that lasted 24 hours a day at the peak of summer provided extremely favorable conditions for plants to flourish.
The second point in the reading suggests that Edmontosaurs were found to have lived together like many present-day migratory animals, and this supports the migration hypothesis. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that living in herds does not necessarily mean Edmontosaurs migrated. It may just provide animals with protection from predators. For example, the Roosevelt elk, which is a large plant-eater in the forest of western US, lives in herds but does not migrate.
The third point the reading proposes that Edmontosaurs were capable of moving long distances for migration. In contrast, the lecturer contends that despite Edmontosaurs’ ability to migrate long distances, they probably had to slow down to protect their young members, which were incapable of long-distance travels. In other words, it would have been impossible for them to reach their destination, so they had to stay on the North Slope.
