What parents have realized is education has an increasingly important role to assume in their children’s lives. Besides, parents nowadays can afford expenditures on their children’s education. This is why they pay more attention to their children’ s education. Thus, I am in agreement with the statement.
To begin with, if we conduct a poll among parents to find out what they think about education, it is evident that most of them think education could give their children a competitive edge in modern society where peer competitions are becoming increasingly fierce. To ensure their children’s competitiveness, they try their utmost to let their children attain education as much as possible. For example, like what many other parents do, my aunt sent his 5-year-old son to attend a foreign teacher’s class after school learning, in order to practice his American accent. The other example is my brother who graduated last year. Instead of taking a job, now he is studying in the Ohio State University because of his mother’s decision of sending him to study overseas. However, the picture was quite the opposite in the past. Since most parents were not aware of the power of education, seldom did they get involved in their descendants’ education: they never helped sign up for an extra-curricular course for their boys and girls; when children graduated from high school, as far as they were concerned, it was unnecessary for them to attend colleges, not to mention studying abroad, because a high school diploma can guarantee their place in a state-owned enterprise. Thus, it can be argued that it is because the awareness of increasing children’s competitiveness by education has penetrated into parents that they get more involved in education.
The second reason I would like to elaborate upon is tuition fees or expenditures on education are affordable to parents. For instance, a friend of mine was admitted by California Institution of Technology last year. The tuition fee of his world-renowned institution is as high as 54,000 dollars per year. This sum of money was affordable to his mother, a manager in a Fortune 500 companies. In her mindset, since she paid tuition fees, she has the right to determine something in his son’s education. Thus, she helped her son choose appropriate courses and programs tailored to meet the needs of well-rounded development. In contrast, two decades ago, the phase of disputing basic requirements of life had not gone yet. Parents in the past cannot spend money on their children’s schooling, so that they were less willing to get involved in children’s education. One case in point is my father. He received college education by taking out bank loans-my grandparents did not pay his college tuition fee. Therefore, my grandmother never asked him about his academic achievement, student activities, major, and so on.
In conclusion, now parents have changed their thoughts about good education and are able to spend money on their children’s education. These two factors contribute to their continued involvement in education, which is totally different from the past.
