Currently, teenagers are widely encouraged to do some part-time jobs like mowing the lawns, helping at a neighborhood grocery, and working as a cashier in a restaurant. Personally, I do agree that one of the best ways that parents can help their teenage children prepare for adult life is to encourage them to take a part-time job, for a couple of reasons.
To begin with, doing some paid part-time jobs help older teenagers to be more independent financially. The underlying reason is that when teenagers earn some money from part-time jobs they can finance part of their own spending. In their daily life, teenagers have plenty of occasions where they need to spend money, such as buying gifts for family and friends, covering the bills when hanging out with classmates, or going to a film with girlfriend. Supposed a teenager boy, who has a part-time job and is doing pretty well, gets a monthly wage that matches his monthly spending. Then his parents must be quite proud of him. Such a sense of achievement may stimulate him to do the same when he becomes an adult, relying on himself and working hard to make ends meet.
In addition, getting involved in some paid part-time jobs also allows teenagers to accumulate some valuable working experience, which may pave the way for their future. When doing a part-time job, a teenager will be given the opportunity to understand a certain job or a particular industry. To be more specific, when doing a part-time job at the flower shop, one can get to know more about the field of gardening or horticulture. When doing a part-time job as a cashier, one can understand the importance of math and what it feels like to be engaged in similar positions like accountant. When working as a part-time guide at the local zoo, one can acquire knowledge about different animals. Such experience and knowledge can be quite helpful when teenagers try to decide what field of study they are interested in, and what they want to focus on in the university as well as what profession they intend to pursue. Take my cousin Howard for example. Since he was 16 years old, he has been working at a local restaurant, helping the chef to purchase meat, vegetables, and spices and to prepare the ingredients needed for dishes. After working there for two years, he figures out that he is interested in how to turn ingredients into varied and delicious dishes. So, he decides that after graduating from high school, he intends to focus on cooking at college, not only to learn American cooking, but also to acquire cooking skills and techniques of other countries like Chinese and Thailand. In the future, he wants to be a gourmet and open his own restaurant.
To sum up, in order to be better prepared for adult life, older teenagers should be encouraged to do some paid part-time jobs, because this not only leads them to be more independent individuals, but also may help them with some future decisions.
