Career success is a target that almost everyone is pursuing for throughout his or her life, since it can bring a decent pay, public recognition, self-confidence, and a strong sense of achievement. Several factors contribute to career success, such as the ability to get along well with people, studying hard in school, a wise career choice ,and so forth. Putting them in order according to their importance, however, is very subjective and relative. From my perspective, the ability to build a good rapport with others is as important as studying hard in school when it comes to success in a future job.
First of all, if one develops an excellent rapport with others, he or she can possibly gain help during hardships in the workplace. Let us consider an inexperienced college student who is working in an auto manufacturer as an intern. Due to lack of working experience, it is difficult for her to judge whether or not her current job-interior designing-would lead to a secure and glittering future. In this circumstance, if she inquires information from an alumnus who is also a friend of her, she will know the fact that auto industry still remains to be a sunrise industry, although it has undergone one hundred years of development and innovation. Meanwhile, this alumnus who is currently working in Audi would offer her helpful resources like reference books, study materials, websites, and so on. Undoubtedly, it is her alumnus' encouragement that helps her stick to her work, pass internship exams, and eventually become a formal interior designer. Her persistence lays solid foundation for her career success. Without this alumnus, she would give up. From this case, we can conclude that the ability to relate well with others really matters to us because our friends can stretch out their helping hands.
Recognizing the importance of harmonious relationships does not mean that one can preclude that of working hard. As a matter of fact, many fields require one to be hard working for years before accomplishing something. One case in point is Tu Youyou, the laureate of 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology. It is known to all that her significant breakthrough can save millions of lives in South China, Africa, and South America. Before discovering artemisinin which can be used to treat malaria, she had conducted scientific researches in the college lab for twenty years. Now let us consider those social scientists. They have spent their time and energy doing carefully controlled experiments on human behavior, inside and outside the lab. The therapies they have proposed are proved to be effective for those who suffer from depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Another striking example is educational researchers. Years of endeavors make them employ better methodologies. Without their great efforts, teachers' teaching skills would not be improved. Can we expect the students who are taught by teachers using traditional teaching skills do significantly better on achievement tests? Therefore, studying hard is of equal importance in one’s career success. In conclusion, the ability to get along well with others is as contributive to one's success in future job as studying hard in school .
