在托福考试中,ETS通过修辞目的题(Rhetorical Purpose Question)去考察学生是否理解作者为什么在段落中提及一段信息,即作者的写作目的。在做题过程中,考生需要在原文中题目给定信息的附近判断并寻找作者的观点进行答题。以《托福官方指南 第3版》61页的一道修辞目的题为例:

在答题时,我们首先需要判断信息“blowhole”在自然段最后一句话中的作用:与其他两个细节——”streamlined bodies”, “the absence of hind legs”一起,共同构成列举关系。
通常可以认为,列举是证据的一种表现形式,用来说明某类事物的具体特征与情况:在原句中,作者列举了三项信息,是为了说明cetaceans(鲸类动物)所具有的三种外貌特征。
作者以这种外貌特征作为主语的写作目的,则是为了说明这句话主干部分的内容——“不能掩盖与陆生哺乳动物的紧密关系”。同时该句还作为一个解释,以支持自然段的首句话,段落的主要观点——鲸类动物是哺乳动物是非常显而易见的。
我们可以看到,当段落结构是上图所示结构的时候时,它即是最常见的General-Specific(总-分)结构,在托福阅读的说明文文章中大量呈现。在GRE考试中,总分结构仍然作为说明文的常见结构,同时它的识别与判断作为一个阅读的基本考察点,以主旨题和修辞目的题的方式呈现。
