　　From my early childhood, my grandparents has been telling me stories about how ravaging the Japanese invasion of Northeast China was, how countless innocent people was murdered and maimed in the Nanking Massacre and how the three-year natural disaster left people hunting barks for food. Life in the wartime was a torture indeed. However, to state that people today lead an easier living would be unfair since people today, from all walks of life, are agonized by the 24/7 rat race and are therefore rendered no less miserable than it was in the past.

　　To begin with, consider children. In the past, for children aged from five to seven, they usually abandon themselves in the neighborhood playground. But now, in order for them to gain a competitive edge over their peers, pre-school education such as piano lessons and art classes are the norm. Take my nephew as an example. From the age of 4, he has been taking calligraphy lessons, and keeps practicing it for three years in a row. With a schoolbag fully packed, he would set out for what he described the “most boring class” he has ever had. Sometimes, he would splash the ink all over the wall just to let out his distress, but of course, to no avail, and he has to keep practicing it if he didn’t want to lag behind. As a result, from an early age, children were deprived of the chances of doing something that truly appeals to him because of the fierce competition.

　　Secondly, the dire condition is even more manifest when it comes to the working adults. Take college professors as an example, compared with what’s in the past when all they have to do was to lecture well, college professors today have to face the pressure of “publish or perish”, in which a professor is strictly required to produce quality dissertations in order to get tenure, or else he or she will be forced to switch to other schools that are below the current level. Moreover, one needs to look no further than clinical doctors. Today, their performance is closely related to drug sales as opposed to what’s in the past when all they have to do was to take good care of a patient. Therefore, working adults are driven fanatically by professional demands as much as it was in the past.

　　From what has been discussed above, we can easily come to the conclusion that life today is definitely no more comfortable than it was when our grandparents were children.
