Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Always telling the truth is the most important consideration in any relationship between people.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
They say “honesty is the only thing worth having in this world, yet it sells for so little”. This, I deem, best illustrates the point whether always being honest is of paramount importance in any relationship. It goes without saying that honesty should be highly valued in our daily life, but to carry the practice too far as to embrace all our social encounters would be a far-fetched one. My reasons are listed below.
To begin with, there are circumstances when telling white lies would be greatly appreciated. That one relative thrown into deep despair with terminal lung cancer would be enormously cheered up by the knowledge that the diagnosis was “just tuberculosis”. A friend who suffers from recurring failure in business would manage to summon up the courage to start from scratch knowing that “success is waiting at the end of every journey”. A little girl born with physical challenge must perceive the world from the bright side if what she was told was “heaven favors those who went through extreme sufferings.” All of these cases of “dishonesty” play an indispensible role in our everyday dealings with people, without which the whole world would be filled with countless downtrodden spirits.
To further illustrate, utter honesty can, and in many cases, lead to our downfall. History is replete with such examples. Consider, for example, Edward Snowden, the former American CIA contractor. In June, 2013, gnawed by a guilty conscience, and urged by the maxim of telling the truth, he was finally able to reveal to the world that the American government was surveilling not only on its allies but also on the rest of the world. Snowden soon came under international attention after the revelation, which was followed by angry charges by the American government on accounts of treason and theft of confidential government information. As a result, he flew to Moscow, Russia, leaving behind him a world of indignant people, astonished and petrified, and remained nowhere to be found till now. Thus, total honesty can sometimes serve us wrong.
From what has been discussed above, we can easily reach the conclusion that honesty is a great virtue, but it should be carried out with certain caveats and there are times when little white lies are just what needed to spice up our life.
