People who develop many different skills are more successful than people who focus on only one skill.
In today’s world, there seem two big trends in terms of professional development: increasing specialization, and increasing diversification. Both paths are viable. In terms of overall potential for success, however, I think those who learn many different skills are better off than those who only focus on one.
1. First of all, people who have a diverse skill set tend to have more options to choose from when it comes to jobs.
2. Because they know how to do many different things, they can fill a wider range of positions than a person who only knows how to do one thing.
3. This allows them to adapt to the marketplace and apply to many types of positions instead of just waiting for a single type of position to open up.
4. For example, if you are a graphic designer who can do advertising work, concept work, and web design, you will probably have a better chance at finding a job during a recession than someone who just knows how to do advertising.(124)
1. Second of all, people who have learned many different skills can acclimate to new jobs more quickly than those who are less versatile.
2. This is because in the process of learning new skills, one also learns how to learn—those who have spent a lot of time acquiring new skills tend to master unfamiliar task in a quicker and more systematic way.
3. They will recognize when to ask for help and when to test things out on their own, when to allow others to lead and when to take initiative.
4. Those who only focus on learning a single skill will feel helpless when tasked with learning additional ones.(112)
Ø 剩下的两段,孩子们一起have a try。
1. Admittedly, in some professions, learning additional skills may not be obviously beneficial.
2. Working in a modern automotive factory, for instance, you may only need to master one skill to successfully perform your duty on the production line.
3. I have met several people who work for car companies and are only knowledgeable about their one small domain of car production—stamping metal for hoods, upholstering seats, installing lights, etc.
4. The rest of the process is mysterious to them, because the division of labor in a factory line only requires them to do one thing well.
5. However, I would argue that even for these individuals, learning more skills can help them in terms of upwards mobility.
6. To leave the production line and become a manager, for instance, one needs to be able to do more than just stamp metal.
7. Thus, even specialists can become more successful by acquiring different skills.(155)
1. Being versatile allows one to not only apply to many different types of jobs, but also adapt more quickly to any particular job.
2. Specialization can undoubtedly be beneficial in many industries, but broadening one’s skill set can pay still dividends even for hardcore specialists.(46)
